In this guide, you will learn how to migrate your test tube colony smoothly, ensuring the ants settle comfortably into their new home. Make sure you have a lot of worker ants or this may harm the colony if moved too soon to a space too big.



Why Move Your Ant Colony from a Test Tube?


Test tubes serve as excellent starter homes for ant colonies, especially during the founding stage. They provide a simple, humid, and secure environment for the queen and her first workers. However, as the colony grows, the limited space and resources in a test tube become insufficient. Moving the colony to a formicarium offers several benefits:


  • More space for the colony to expand and build tunnels

  • Better visibility for observation and study

  • Improved ventilation and humidity control

  • Easier maintenance and feeding


Understanding when and how to migrate is crucial to avoid harming the colony.


Preparing for the Migration


Before starting the migration, preparation is key. Here are the steps to get ready:


Choose the Right Formicarium


Select a formicarium that suits the species and size of your colony. Consider:


  • Size: Large enough to accommodate growth but not too big to cause stress

  • Material: Acrylic or glass formicaria offer good visibility and durability

  • Design: Includes a nesting area and a foraging zone


Set Up the Formicarium Properly


Prepare the formicarium environment before introducing the ants:


  • Hydrate the nesting area to maintain humidity

  • Add substrate if required by the species

  • Ensure temperature matches the ants’ natural preferences

  • Place food and water sources nearby but outside the nest chamber


Gather Necessary Tools


Have these items ready for a smooth migration:


  • Soft brush or small paintbrush

  • Tweezers (preferably plastic or smooth metal)

  • Cotton balls or plugs

  • A small container for temporary holding if needed

  • Red light or dim lighting to reduce ant stress


Step-by-Step Migration Process


The migration should be calm and slow to avoid alarming the ants.


Step 1: Observe the Colony’s Behavior


Watch the ants for a day or two before migration. Look for signs they are ready to move, such as:


  • Workers exploring outside the test tube

  • The queen moving towards the opening

  • Ants carrying brood near the tube entrance


Step 2: Connect the Test Tube to the Formicarium


Create a direct path between the test tube and the formicarium:


  • Remove the cotton plug from the test tube end

  • Attach the test tube opening to the formicarium entrance using tape or a connector

  • Ensure the connection is secure and stable


Step 3: Encourage the Ants to Move


Ants naturally explore new spaces when conditions are right. To help them migrate:


  • Place food and water in the formicarium to attract workers

  • Apply heat to the formicarium in a gradient - but not too hot!

  • Avoid shaking or sudden movements


Step 4: Wait Patiently


Migration can take hours or even days. Do not force the ants out by shaking or tapping the test tube. Instead, allow them to move at their own pace.


Step 5: Remove the Test Tube After Migration


Once most ants, including the queen and brood, have moved into the formicarium:


  • Gently detach the test tube

  • Clean and store it for future use or discard safely


Tips for a Successful Migration


  • Maintain humidity in both the test tube and formicarium to keep ants comfortable

  • Use red light during observation since ants cannot see red light well, reducing disturbance

  • Avoid sudden temperature changes that can stress the colony

  • Do not feed immediately after migration; wait until ants settle to avoid attracting pests

  • Monitor the colony daily for signs of stress or escape attempts


Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them


Ants Refuse to Move


If ants stay inside the test tube:


  • Check if the formicarium is too dry or too bright

  • Try placing a small piece of cotton soaked in sugar water inside the formicarium

  • Wait longer; some colonies take more time to explore


Queen Does Not Move


The queen is critical. If she stays behind:


  • Do not force her out; this can cause injury or death

  • Ensure the test tube is connected properly and the environment is inviting

  • Sometimes, gently tapping the test tube near the opening can encourage movement


Ants Escape During Migration


To prevent escapes:


  • Work in a contained area with barriers

  • Use a shallow tray or container to catch any escapees

  • Close all openings except the migration path


After Migration Care


Once the colony is settled:


  • Keep the formicarium clean and free of mold

  • Provide regular food and water

  • Maintain stable temperature and humidity

  • Observe colony growth and behavior
